If you are a surfer or want to learn how to surf, PV doesn’t have surfing near downtown. However, there are great surfing spots located in Riviera Nayarit which is just a short drive from Puerto Vallarta. Keep reading below to learn more about surfing in PV. Then, book your vacation to PV so you can destress and relax in Mexico!

Where to Surf in PV

To start with, many people that come to Puerto Vallarta for vacation decide to visit the coastal town of Sayulita. Located about 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita  is a favorite surfing spot. Everyone from beginners up to advanced surfers will enjoy surfing in Sayulita. The town has earned the Pueblo Magico designation and has excellent restaurants, fun bars and wonderful shopping, too. The central town plaza is cheerfully decorated with bright and festive papel picado, a Mexican party staple and a favorite spot for picture taking. Sayulita is located on the open ocean instead of inside Banderas Bay, making the waves bigger and currents stronger. If you don’t have your own surfboard, it’s inexpensive and easy to rent one right on the beach. Sayulita is a must visit spot during your vacation to Puerto Vallarta.

La Lancha Beach

Next, La Lancha Beach is another one of the best surfing spots near PV. You can access the beach off the road to Punta de Mita. The entry to La Lancha Beach is a trail found across the road from the Oxxo and Wildmex surfboard rental shop. After a 10 minute walk through the jungle, you will reach La Lancha beach. The wide beach has fine, golden sand and turquoise waters and several different breaks. That way, both beginners and skilled surfers will enjoy themselves. In general, new surfers go take lessons in the morning. Some of the more talented surfers prefer La Lancha and you may even see a pro surfer there. Plan ahead and bring water and snacks as the beach does not have any restaurants or shops.

Marigalante Pirate Ship Tour

Lastly, if you want to take a break from surfing and try a top PV tour during your vacation, book tickets on the Marigalante pirate ship. They have tours available during the day and evening. The Marigalante pirate ship tour includes a delicious gourmet dinner, premium open bar, a spectacular pirate show with impressive sword fighting, and real cannon fire.  There is even a breathtaking fireworks display finale during the evening tour. The good natured pirate crew will make your day cruising Banderas Bay one of your favorite vacation memories. If you have children, you can try the Marigalante pirate ship day tour. It includes a stop at a private beach where guests can enjoy watersports including paddle boarding and swimming. There is even an exciting treasure hunt for kids. They also have COVID safety measures in place to keep guests safe. Make sure to book your tickets in advance as the Marigalante is one of PV’s top tours and sells out fast.
