The Night of the Iguana  

To begin with, one of the first Puerto Vallarta films to put PV on the map was The Night of the Iguana. Filmed in 1964, the film starred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. While both actors were actually married to other people at the time, Burton and Taylor began a passionate love affair. Their romance attracted the news media attention in the United States. Consequently, tourism to Puerto Vallarta significantly increased after the film debuted in the mid 1960’s. Many people credit the film and especially Elizabeth Taylor for helping to propel Puerto Vallarta into a top tourist destination in Mexico. 

Herbie Goes Bananas, Predator and Revenge

In 1980, Herbie Goes Bananas was filmed in Puerto Vallarta. Herbie Goes Bananas was a 1980 American comedy adventure film, that was the fourth installment in the Herbie franchise which was produced by Walt Disney Productions. The Film starred Herbie, a white Volkswagen racing Beetle with a mind of its own. Herbie enjoyed tons of silly adventure and fun in and around Puerto Vallarta. He even boarded a cruise ship that was docked at the PV terminal. Also, the movie Predator starring Schwarzenegger was filmed in 1987 in the Sierra Madre mountain jungle just a few miles south of Puerto Vallarta.  It was an American science fiction action film directed by John McTiernan that was written by brothers Jim and John Thomas. Schwarzenegger played the role of an elite military rescue team leader that was on a mission to save hostages in guerrilla-held territory in Central America. Predator became a very popular movie in the States and around the world. Next, Revenge was a 1990 romantic thriller that had some scenes filmed in Puerto Vallarta, too.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Sundown, Limitless and Godzilla

More recently, several other films were filmed in Puerto Vallarta, too. In 2008, Beverly Hills Chihuahua was a movie filmed in PV about Chloe, a chihuahua that gets lost in Mexico while on a vacation with her owner. In order to get back home safely, she relies on new friends and a lonesome German shepherd to protect her. Next,  Limitless was a 2011 American science fiction thriller film directed by Neil Burger and written by Leslie Dixon. Based on the novel The Dark Fields by Alan Glynn, Limitless was filmed in Puerto Vallarta, too. Then, the movie Sundown was filmed in 2016, which was a story about two high schoolers that travelled to Puerto Vallarta for spring break. However, the teens up on a wild adventure after a local steals one of their father’s Rolex watches. Lastly, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is an American Monster film that was partially filmed in Puerto Vallarta, too.
